What ground support covers

Ground support is everything that happens to an aircraft when it is not flying, and it is the part of aviation that is invisible right up until it fails. The section below describes the scope of the discipline — what ground support means in general terms.

• Turnaround — the sequence between arrival and next departure, most of which has to happen at once rather than in order. The constraint is rarely any single task; it is the coordination of several tasks sharing one aircraft and one patch of ground.
• Power and air — external electrical power and conditioned air while the aircraft’s own systems are down, so that work can continue without running the aircraft to provide for itself.
• Movement and positioning — towing, pushback and parking, including the clearances that have to be kept around an aircraft and the marshalling that keeps them.
• Servicing — replenishment of the consumables an aircraft needs between flights, and removal of what it has accumulated.
• Tooling and spares — the equipment and stock held at the site, which determines what can actually be done there rather than deferred to somewhere else.
• Facilities — the hardstanding, power, storage, workshop space and lighting without which none of the above is available in any weather or at any hour.

The word in the company’s own description is articulated: not simply strong, but jointed — able to move, extend and adapt to what a particular aircraft needs on a particular day. A support system that only handles the routine case is a support system that stops the moment something is not routine.

Why the company builds its own

The confirmed position is that Bengal Aerospace builds its own support centres rather than contracting the function out. That is a consequential choice, and the reasoning below follows from it.

Availability is the whole point. Ground support is a dependency: an aircraft cannot be turned round faster than its slowest supplier, and a support arrangement that is available on someone else’s schedule puts the operator’s schedule inside someone else’s. Owning the function means the answer to “can this be done today” is decided in-house.

Capability compounds. Equipment and procedures built for the company’s own aircraft accumulate into something specific to how those aircraft are actually operated, instead of a generic service specified to a lowest common denominator. Over time, in-house support tends to be the place where the operator’s real working knowledge ends up living.

It closes the loop with the rest of the company. Support centres are where design assumptions meet reality — which is useful information to have flowing back to Plavata Systems, and which is worth far more when the people finding it out work for the same company.

On the name

The wing is named for Jagadish Chandra Basu — also written Bose — the Bengali polymath whose research sat where physics, engineering and biology meet.

Basu worked on the generation, transmission and detection of very short radio waves — millimetre-wave research carried out decades before the field had a name or an industry, using apparatus he designed and built himself. He demonstrated transmission through walls, developed semiconductor detectors for the purpose, and did not patent most of it. He went on to study electrical response in plants, building instruments sensitive enough to measure it, and argued for continuity between living and non-living matter at a time when that was an unwelcome position.

Two things about that work read across to a ground support wing: he built his own instruments because nothing adequate existed to buy, and he was as interested in measuring what happened as in making it happen.
